YB Teo Nie Ching

Deputy Minister of Communications, Malaysia

YB Teo Nie Ching was born in Batu Pahat, Johor. She read law at the University of West England and graduated in 2002. She then returned to Malaysia to practice as a Advocates & Solicitors in Kuala Lumpur after completing her CLP at the Universiti Malaya. She was in practice when she was offered by the Democratic Action Party (DAP) to contest in the Serdang constituency for the 12th General Election.

She was then elected as a Member of Parliament for Serdang, Selangor in 2008 and Member of Parliament for Kulai, Johor in 2013. She contested for her third term in 2018 and is currently the Member of Parliament for Kulai, Johor.

She was sworn in as the Deputy Minister of Education in 2018 after Malaysia’s 14th General Elections and served until February 2020.
As the Deputy Minister of Education, she w a s responsible in particular for preschool education, access to education for undocumented and/or stateless children, inclusive education for children with special needs, welfare of vernacular schools, daily operations of schools and of course assisting the then Minister YB Dr Maszlee Malik and all other aspects of education in the country.

She contested for the fourth term in 2022 and successfully defended the Parliamentary seat for Kulai, Johor. She has been appointed as Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital in December 2022, which then change to Ministry of Communications in December 2023 after a Cabinet reshuffle.

She is currently a member of Democratic Action Party (DAP) Central Executive Committee, serving as its National Publicity Secretary. Also the National Chairperson of DAP Women and the Chairperson of the Johor DAP State Committee.

Her experience as a Member of Parliament and as a lawyer has given her insights into many social issues and she has been passionate about socio-economic development of women, statelessness among children, and child rights particularly on child marriage. She has also lent her voice for single mothers especially from the B40 group as well as the participation of women in politics.
